Are you looking for temporary access solutions to help your crew and heavy equipment overcome impassable lands? Access mats are the perfect solution for you! At GFI Solutions, we offer customers multiple access solutions to help them safely transport heavy loads across unstable grounds. We understand the stress of running projects on challenging terrain, which is why we offer multiple access mats to suit all your needs! Read on to learn more about our access mats!

Access Mats

Access mats are used to create temporary roadways to navigate unstable terrain and access remote worksites. They can be stacked together to build right of ways (e.g. for pipelines or electrical right of ways), temporary roadways, temporary staging yards, drilling pads and much more. The typical size of an access mat is 8’X14’x5″ but can be custom-built to suit the requirements of any project.

GFI Solutions Access Mats

GFI Solutions uses our innovative Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) technology to manufacture access mats that are three to five times stronger than traditional bolted mats. Instead of fastening Douglas Fir planks together with bolts to build an access mat, our CLT access mats use an environmentally safe adhesive to bond Longleaf Southern Yellow Pine wooden planks together. This allows the weight on top of the access mat to be disbursed evenly through the entire mat vs the weight being disbursed through the bolts on a traditional bolted access mat. Not only is Longleaf Southern Yellow Pine wood 33% stronger than Douglas Fir, but it’s also more sustainable as it grows to harvestable maturity in 20 years vs Douglas Fir, which takes 80 years to harvest.

The unique manufacturing process of our CLT access mats makes them lighter than traditional bolted mats, you can fit 72 mats per load saving you up to 60% in transportation costs. Since our CLT access mats are two-thirds the weight of traditional bolted mats, we can fit double the amount of mats on shuttle trucks and loaders , saving you up to 40% on installation and removal costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES THE CONSTRUCTION OF SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS MAKE THEM MORE DURABLE?
Mat strength lies in its ability to transfer weight through the mat into the surface below. Bolted mats only transfer load at the location of the mechanical fasteners. Adhered CLT mats transfer the load through every available square foot. Additionally, the adhesive provides a moisture barrier at each layer, protecting the mat from eventual rot and decay.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT SITESAFE™CLT ACCESS MATS IS AN ENGINEERED PRODUCT?
Bolted access mats and traditional timber mats are made with a variety of mixed hardwoods and softwoods, without consideration for lumber grade — resulting in inconsistency across mats. With an engineered product, you can be assured that every mat delivered will perform to your specifications.
WE NEED MATS THAT CONNECT; IS THAT POSSIBLE WITH SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS?
mats can be fitted with interconnecting fingers that work in the same manner as traditional bolted access mats.
WHAT SIZES ARE AVAILABLE?

Currently SITESAFE™ CLT Access mats are available in 3- or 5-ply construction.

  • SITESAFE™ CLT Access mats 300 – 8” x 14 long
  • SITESAFE™ CLT Access mats 500 – 8” x 16” long
  • SITESAFE™ CLT Access mats 700 – Spans Gap of 35′, Total system is 40′
ARE SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS SAFE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING WETLANDS?
Yes, in fact they are superior in promoting environmental stewardship. The adhesive becomes chemically inactive prior to leaving the facility, presenting no harm to the environment. (The metals in bolted mats oxidize, leaching contaminants into the ground and creating disposal difficulties.)

The raw materials in TerraLam mats are farmed in approximately 20 years, where the hardwood species used in bolted mats can take 80-100 years to regrow.

Additionally, the solid surface and adhesive barriers between layers don’t allow invasive species to embed themselves into the mats like with traditional mats.

HOW WILL SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS PERFORM IN EXTREME OR LESS-THAN-IDEAL CONDITIONS?

SiteSafe™ mats have been tested successfully in temperatures as low as -70°F and as high as 150°F. While all wooden mats can be slippery in wet, muddy, and icy conditions, the solid top of SiteSafe™ mats makes removing mud, snow, or ice much easier. Once SiteSafe™ mats are traveled on, they become well-seasoned, mitigating slickness in challenging conditions.

CAN A SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS BE REPAIRED, OR DOES IT NEED TO BE DISPOSED OF ONCE DAMAGED?

Since SiteSafe™ mats are a solid block of wood, necessary repairs can be done easily and at less expense than with bolted access mats. Repairs to bolted mats often require removing rusted or bent bolts and fragmented boards. Damaged SiteSafe™ mats are safer on the jobsite than a damaged bolted mat, as a damaged CLT mat does not expose crews to puncture injuries or equipment damage.

IS IT BEST TO RENT, LEASE, OR BUY SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS?
GFI prides itself in creating long-term relationships, not maximizing transactions. A GFI expert will review your project and work with you to determine an optimal solution for your business.
WILL THE SITESAFE™ CLT ACCESS MATS DELAMINATE OR FALL APART?

SiteSafe™ CLT mats are constructed with rapid-growth southern yellow pine #2 grade kiln-dried lumber, along with a moisture-activated polyurethane adhesive. The wood’s existing water helps cure the adhesive, creating an exceptional bond. Independent laboratories, including the USDA Forest Products Laboratory, San Diego State University, and Henkel Adhesives, have validated the strength and durability of SiteSafe™ CLT Access Mats products.
